What is the flu vaccination?

The flu vaccine helps your body produce antibodies to fight against the flu virus.

Every year, the types of flu viruses change, so a new vaccine is made to protect us from the new strains. By getting the flu shot, your body becomes better prepared to fight against the virus if you happen to come into contact with it.

What is the the pneumococcal (pneumonia) vaccine?

The pneumococcal vaccine will offer protection against infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae that can lead to pneumonia, septicaemia and meningitis which can be life threatening.

The bacteria can spread when a person coughs, sneezes, or when they are in close contact with others. Anyone can get this sickness, but it is more common in older people, young children, people with chronic diseases, and those with a weak immune system or no spleen.

Why get the two vaccines together?

For convenience, you just need to attend the one appointment to protect yourself from two serious respiratory illnesses.

The pneumococcal vaccine is highly recommended for those over 65 or those in an at-risk group. If you are unsure whether you need the combo vaccine you should talk to your pharmacist or GP.
